When it comes to daily waterproofing work, waterproof coatings are one of the most common choices. They perform exceptionally well in terms of impermeability and water resistance. At the same time, they feature excellent flexibility and tear resistance, which means that even when a building experiences settlement or structural deformation, the coating does not crack or peel.
Another major advantage is ease of application: simply open the container, and you can apply the coating by brushing, rolling, or spraying. Even with two-component waterproof coatings, the only additional step is mixing—which can be quickly handled with an electric mixer, adding very little extra workload.
But here comes the question: Why do waterproof coatings sometimes need to be combined with polyester fabric?
Why Add Polyester Fabric?
There are three main reasons why polyester fabric is added during waterproof coating applications:
-
Strengthening weak points: At certain joints or details, due to their special structural conditions, polyester fabric is needed to enhance the strength of the waterproof layer and improve tear resistance.
-
Large-area reinforcement: When applying coatings over wide surfaces, polyester fabric helps prevent uneven thickness and reinforces the tensile strength of the waterproof film.
-
Slopes and vertical surfaces: On sloped or vertical surfaces, adding polyester fabric helps secure the coating to the substrate, prevents sagging during application, and ensures a uniform waterproof layer.
Where Is Polyester Fabric Needed?
Polyester fabric reinforcement is especially important in the following areas:
-
Critical joints: Such as pipe roots, internal and external corners, and wall bases. These are vulnerable points where the waterproof layer is more prone to cracking, so polyester fabric reinforcement is necessary. It is also used when repairing cracks on concrete substrates.
-
Special areas: For example, parapet walls, gutters, and steep roof slopes. Adding polyester fabric here not only prevents coating sagging (which could lead to uneven thickness) but also increases the overall strength of the waterproof layer.
Construction Method: “One Fabric, Three Coats”
The standard application method of combining waterproof coating with polyester fabric is known as “One Fabric, Three Coats.” This technique is most commonly used at joints and critical areas.
Steps:
-
Base coat: Apply the first layer of waterproof coating onto a clean, prepared substrate. This acts as both a primer and an adhesive for the polyester fabric.
-
Fabric layer: Lay polyester fabric over the first coat while it is still fresh. The fabric must fully cover the coating layer, without wrinkles or bubbles.
-
Second coat: Apply another layer of waterproof coating over the polyester fabric, ensuring that the fabric is fully saturated and bonded.
-
Final coat: After waiting 4–8 hours for the second coat to dry completely, apply the third and final layer of waterproof coating.
Once completed, the “One Fabric, Three Coats” system provides a durable, flexible, and reinforced waterproof barrier.
