Waterproofing is a critical part of modern construction, ensuring the durability and safety of buildings by preventing water infiltration. Depending on the material type and construction method, waterproofing techniques can be classified into several categories. Below is an overview of the main types of waterproofing construction.


1. Rigid Waterproofing Materials

Rigid waterproofing mainly refers to the application of waterproof mortar or waterproof concrete.

These materials are typically made from cement, sand, and aggregates, sometimes enhanced with additives or polymers. By carefully adjusting mix proportions, reducing porosity, and improving structural density, rigid waterproofing materials achieve a certain level of impermeability. They are commonly used in foundations, basements, and other structural components where strength and durability are equally important.


2. Coating Waterproofing Materials

Waterproof coatings—also known as liquid-applied membranes—are fluid or semi-fluid substances applied directly onto surfaces. Once the solvent or water evaporates, or through chemical reactions, they form an elastic, waterproof film that protects the surface from water and moisture.

China began developing waterproof coatings in the 1960s, initially with asphalt-based products. Over the past decades, the industry has shifted toward polymer-modified asphalt coatings and synthetic polymer coatings, producing a wide range of high- to low-grade products.

Application methods vary:

  • Thin coatings are typically applied by brushing or spraying.

  • Thick coatings are usually applied by troweling or scraping.

For enhanced durability, coatings can be reinforced with fiberglass or polyester fabric, creating multi-layered waterproof membranes.

3. Waterproof Membranes

Waterproof membranes are one of the most widely used materials in construction. They are generally categorized into three types:

  • Asphalt-based membranes

  • Polymer-modified asphalt membranes

  • Synthetic polymer membranes

While traditional asphalt membranes are still in use, polymer-modified and synthetic membranes represent the future due to their superior performance.

Common installation methods include hot bonding, cold bonding, torch-on, self-adhesive, mechanical fastening, and embedding techniques.


4. Metal Sheet Waterproofing

Metal sheet waterproofing integrates the structural layer and waterproof layer into one system, primarily used in roofing. Common materials include zinc, aluminum-zinc alloy, aluminum, magnesium-aluminum alloy, titanium, copper, and stainless steel sheets, usually 0.4–1.5 mm thick.

Depending on the coating quality and material type, service life can exceed 50 years. Panels may be pre-fabricated in factories or shaped on-site, with or without insulation layers. Due to their durability and versatility, metal sheet roofing systems are widely used in public buildings, factories, warehouses, and residential projects.


5. Sealant Waterproofing

Sealants are used to fill joints, cracks, window frames, glass edges, and pipe connections, ensuring watertight and airtight performance.

The two main categories are:

  • Modified asphalt sealants

  • Synthetic polymer sealants

Construction methods vary, but the most common are cold-applied embedding and hot-pouring.


6. Grouting and Leak Sealing

Grouting involves injecting specially formulated chemical solutions into structural cracks under pressure. Once the material diffuses and solidifies, it provides waterproofing, leak sealing, reinforcement, and structural strengthening.

Grouting techniques are typically divided into:

  • High-pressure fast grouting

  • Low-pressure slow grouting

This method is particularly effective for repairing deep cracks in concrete structures.
